Here's a link to a thread that covers changes that are available, at a cost: Will Colt put the checkering on the gun? Of course, that and much more can be done through the Custom Shop. There must be a sign in the shop at Colt that says "NO CHECKERING": it just baffles me. The mainspring housing has vertical grooves instead of checkering, something I've never seen before, but then my experience with Colts is limited. I'm just going to hope that the ignition components (hammer, sear, and disconnector) are hardened steel as well.Ĭolt continues to avoid putting checkering on the frame's front strap, which annoys me because it is really important for grip, in my opinion. The frame and slide are not polished, but do have a nice traditional blued finish, set off by conventional Rosewood stocks.Ĭolt does make the point that this gun has a forged receiver, slide, barrel, and slide stop, which is another way of saying that these are not MIM parts. All in all, this is a very complete package, competing with Kimber, Springfield Armory and even STI, at least on paper. This Colt has a full-length guide rod, lowered and flared ejection port, an aluminum trigger with adjustable over-travel, extended beavertail grip safety, lightweight hammer, Novak® low-mount 3-dot carry sights, and even a relief cut under the trigger guard. What immediately caught my attention was the standard ambi safety, but then a closer look convinced me that I might not have to change a thing to use this gun in USPSA Single-Stack Division. The LGS owner saw me come through the door, and with a smile on his face showed me the XSE™ right away. The one change that I need to make on most 1911s is to fit an ambidextrous thumb safety, because I'm left-handed and I must have that to shoot the gun in competition. While I knew I wanted a Colt, I was really interested in finding one that I could shoot without modification. I came across this pistol at my local (and favorite) gun store one fine afternoon when I happened to have money in my pocket and a Colt on my mind. The subject of this post is the full-sized Colt XSE™ 1911 pistol, model 01980XSE.
